Articulated Mat Surveys
Arc Surveying & Mapping, Inc. performed pre and post construction multibeam bathymetric surveys to assist a Jacksonville District US Army Corps of Engineer contractor with the installation of on site fabricated geo textile rock filled mats at the Kissimmee River Restoration project, Okeechobee, Florida.
The project required the contractor to place hundreds of 4’ x 6’ x 1’ rock filled mats on the slopes and river bottom surface surrounding a newly installed water control structure in order to prevent stream bank erosion during flood water events.
The pre-placement surveys of the excavated slopes and watercourse areas were performed to assure the underwater surfaces complied with ACOE specifications prior to the placement of the articulated mats. Immediately after placement of the 4’ x 6’ x 1’ mats, Arc performed a high-resolution multibeam swath survey to assure the mats met ACOE placement tolerances of 2/10ths vertical and 5/10ths apart. Survey data were processed on site and provided to the contractor, including daily survey reports as required by the ACOE. At the conclusion of mattress (mat) placement Arc provided multibeam verification surveys of the stone rip rap placed on the mattresses. All surveys were performed under the direction of Arc’s Professionally Registered Florida Surveyor and Certified Hydrographer.
Equipment used on this project consisted of a 23 ft. fully enclosed USCG certified survey vessel, a Reson 7125 multibeam swath sounder operating at 400 kHz, a Trimble DDGPS/RTK system, a POS/MV Wavemaster and Hysweep software.
