During 2002, Arc Surveying & Mapping, Inc. was contracted by Continental Engineering, Inc. to provide multibeam swath surveys of the Mississippi River for the Vicksburg District US Army Corps of Engineers. The multibeam surveys were performed from water’s edge to water’s edge during very high river stages, which provided bathymetry over and around numerous training dikes, sandbars and chutes, not usually available to multibeam swath surveys. Horizontal positioning of the surveys (Mississippi West State Plane Coordinates NAD83) were performed using USCG NavBeacon DGPS.

Water surface data were monitored from Vicksburg District vertical control and furnished in NGVD29. At the completion of each reach, design and ASCII files were submitted via FTP server. Depth Soundings were collected using a Reson 8124 multibeam swath sounder operating at 200 kHz. The 200kHz transducer contains eighty one beams with 1.5 degree spot spacing. Bottom coverage is 120 degrees or approximately 3.5 times the depth. Trimble DGPS was used for positioning, receiving differential GPS locations from the closest United States Coast Guard (USCG) NavBeacon. Data are collected and processed using HySweep Software.
